FAQ's: Flower related questions

At the product description, you can find whether a product is sold per stem, per head or per bunch. If you click on the product details, you can find how many stems a bunch contains. Please note that these are estimates.

There are two varieties of freesia's: single flowered and double flowered. The difference is that double flowered varieties are bigger and fuller.

You can see in the name of the flower if it is double or single flowered. Freesia's with EN are single and with DU are double.

There are two varieties of lisianthus: single headed and double headed. The Piccolo is single headed and Mariachi is double headed. This also means that the bloom of the Mariachi is bigger.

Cymbidium Orchids (Cymb) are sold per stem and there are about 10 to 15 heads per stem. Please note that the Cymb Mi are mini Cymbidiums. This variety as smaller heads then the normal Cymbidium.

Phaleanopsis Orchids (Phal) are sold per head. There are normally about 5 to 8 heads on one stem of Phaleanopsis. Dendrobium Orchids (Dendr) are also sold per head.

The description of Lilies can be a bit confusing. When the flower name includes LF it's Longiflorum, OR is Oriental, AZ is Asiatic and LA is Longiflorum/Asiatic.

Please note that lilies have multiple bulbs per stem (normally between 4 and 8).

There are three varieties of chrysanths on our website: T (for Tros, small heads with multiple heads per stem), San (for Santini, with multiple heads per stem) and G (for geplozen, with big heads and just one head per stem).

We supply two varieties of carnations. You can recognize them by their name on our website.

ST stands for steel (Dutch for one stem with one bloom)

TR stands for Tros (Dutch for Spray, which means multiple small heads per stem)

We take very good care of the flowers we send to our customers. Your flowers are being packed in a special designed box in Holland and they're being transported to your address by UPS within 2 days. Nevertheless, it is vital that you take care of the flowers in the best possible way when you receive them. You want to have the flowers at the best possible shape when the wedding is on!

Taking care of the flowers after receiving them

Directly water the flowers & give them nutrition
After receiving the flowers you should take really good care of them. Even though we've taken very good care of the flowers before and during shipment, you should be aware of the amount of time the flowers have been stored in the specially designed box.

After their journey your flowers will need a little bit of care and attention. So please bear in mind that the flowers will be thirsty. Water the flowers, using a glass vase. A glass vase lets you see when the water becomes cloudy. Vase water should be changed once a week. Always remember to add cut flower food to the clean water. Cut flower food is extremely important as it stops bacterial growth in the water. It provides the flowers with the key nutrients they need for growth and producing beautiful blooms. It is advisable to re-cut the flowers before replacing them in fresh water.

Cut the flowers at an angle

Of course you don't have to make the floral arrangement at the moment you receive the flowers, but we do advice to cut the flowers at an angle before putting them into water. An angled cut opens up more water vessels and secondly it stops the cut stem resting firmly on the bottom of the vase which would stop the flower from drinking the water it needs.

Damaging the end of a stem by cutting it roughly with a blunt object leads to infection of the water and subsequently results in bacteria blocking the wood vessels in the stem. Damaging or bruising the stem will also cause the flower unnecessary stress which will consequently shorten its vase life. By using a sharp knife you dramatically reduce the damage to the water vessels, enabling the flower to easily absorb plenty of food and water. Cutting at an angle will stop the stem resting on the bottom of the vase and sealing itself.

It is not necessary to remove the thorns but if you do, be careful not to damage the stem. If damage occurs, bacteria will proceed to grow in the open wounds which would significantly shorten the life of the flower.

Keeping the flowers in the best shape

Where should I store my flowers until the wedding is on?
Flowers stay fresher for longer when placed in a cool, light location away from direct sunlight, draughts and central heating. Extreme temperatures such as strong sunshine or cold breezes will result in the growth of bacteria and cause the flowers to evaporate water more vigorously, consequently leading to premature wilting.

Exotic flowers such as Orchids and Zantedeschia require a slightly warmer temperature than other flowers. The ideal temperature for these flowers is 15 °C, whereas most other cut flowers store in temperatures of between 4 °C and 8 °C.

Keep the flowers away from fruit

Ripening fruit releases a harmful gas called ethylene which speeds up the ageing process in flowers causing them to wilt. Especially bananas and avocados are particularly bad news to be next to flowers as they give off a lot of ethylene gas.

Nevertheless, it is vital that you take good care of the flowers after receiving them. You want to have the flowers at the best possible shape when the wedding is on! We recommend that the delivery date of the flowers is a couple of days in advance of the wedding you’ve planned. The flowers need some time to rest to be in their best shape when the guests arrive at the wedding!

In case of some flowers, especially lilies, spores can land on clothing. This can give dirty spots. If the spores land on your clothing, let it dry, for instance in the sun, and remove it with a vacuum cleaner.
